Houston
Houston…we thought it was a boring city, but the opposite is true! In the morning we went to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and visited the Butterfly Center. The butterflies were wearing the most exotic outfits. The guard asked us to check our hair and clothes first before leaving the garden…a butterfly could stick on us as a refugee…how cute! We visited afterwards the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston and saw the exposition from Marilyn Minter, ‘Pretty/Dirty’. It was a manifest on our culture’s complex and contradictory emotions around the feminine body and beauty. After seeing this interesting exposition we drove our rental car to 19th street, but ended up in the middle of nowhere. Our navigation system was not really okay. We talked with the very kind and friendly locals over there and finally we arrived on 19th street in Heights a little later. We visited very nice vintage stores like Replay and Thrifty. We had a nice lunch in Down House, a lovely spot in the neighbourhood of 19th street. Lovely lanes with green trees and big houses formed our landscape while driving back to the hussle and bustle of Houston downtown. Meanwhile we spotted a nice pink old Cadillac in the parking lot of the Target. Houston has so much more to offer than we would have thought. Culture, art, a lot of vintage stores and such a laid back feeling in the Heights area of Houston. An ugly city changed into a very interesting place to be for us. How cool is that!
